VPS Hosting for Applications That Have Outgrown Shared Hosting

Dedicated RAM and disk, full root access and engineers who can help when something breaks. Run your own stack without managing everything alone.

A virtual private server (VPS) is an isolated slice of a physical server. You get your own operating system, your own allocated memory and disk, and root access, so you can install what your application needs instead of working inside the limits of a shared hosting account.

That control suits Node.js, Python and Laravel applications, self-hosted tools, databases, staging environments and any site whose traffic or plugins have outgrown shared hosting. It also means somebody has to look after the server. Every Zealous VPS plan includes free DevOps support and 24/7 application monitoring, and Managed VPS is available if you would rather hand the server over entirely.

What every VPS plan includes

Guaranteed RAM and disk

Resources are allocated to your server, so a noisy neighbour on the same host does not eat your memory.

Full root access

Install packages, tune the kernel, run Docker, open the ports you need. It is your server.

Daily backups

Automated daily backups, so a bad deploy or an accidental deletion is recoverable.

Firewall protection

Network-level filtering in front of your server, with your own rules configured on top.

24/7 application monitoring

We continuously monitor application availability and generate alerts when issues are detected. Response and remediation depend on the selected support scope.

Free DevOps support

Help with deployment, server configuration, troubleshooting and performance, from engineers.

Free SSL

SSL certificates for your domains, without the yearly renewal scramble.

Cloud Panel

A web control panel for managing sites, databases and certificates if you do not want to live in the terminal.

Choosing a VPS size

These are the current plans. Prices are on the pricing page.

PlanRAMDiskA sensible starting point for
VPS 2GB2GB40GBOne small site or application, staging environments, light APIs
VPS 4GB4GB40GBSeveral sites, or an application plus its database
VPS 4GB Performance4GB80GBThe same memory with more room for uploads, logs and databases
VPS 8GB8GB80GBBusy WordPress or WooCommerce, larger databases, background workers
VPS 8GB Performance8GB160GBData-heavy applications, many sites, large media libraries

RAM is usually the first limit you hit. As a rough guide, a PHP-FPM worker can use anywhere from 50 to 150MB depending on the application, a Node.js process typically needs a few hundred megabytes, and a database wants memory for its cache. Add up what your stack needs at peak, leave 20 to 30 percent for the operating system and file cache, and you have a realistic minimum. If you are unsure, tell us what you run and we will size it with you.

What a production VPS looks like

A VPS with a default install is not a production server. A typical setup puts a reverse proxy such as Nginx in front, terminates TLS there, runs the application under a process manager, keeps the database listening on localhost only, and allows inbound traffic on the ports that need it and nothing else.

Example: a minimal default-deny firewall with UFW
ufw default deny incoming
ufw default allow outgoing
ufw allow 22/tcp
ufw allow 80,443/tcp
ufw enable

Add key-only SSH, automatic security updates, off-server backups and monitoring, and you have the baseline. Free DevOps support can help you build it, and Linux server management covers it in more depth.

Getting started

  1. 1

    Choose a plan

Pick the size that matches your stack. You can move up later as the application grows.

  2. 2

    Tell us what you run

Message us on WhatsApp with your stack: language, framework, database and rough traffic.

  3. 3

    Get root access

Your server is provisioned and you get full root access.

  4. 4

    Deploy with support

Deploy your application. Our DevOps support can help with configuration, Git-based deployments or Docker.

  5. 5

    Run with monitoring and backups

Monitoring and daily backups are already running, so you can focus on the application.

Ask a Question

Every plan includes free DevOps support, which means help with configuration, deployment, troubleshooting and optimization when you ask for it. Day-to-day administration, such as patching and security, is yours unless you add Managed VPS.

Yes. Every VPS plan includes full root access.

Yes. You can upgrade as your site grows without starting over.

Free website migration is part of our hosting offer. For custom applications we will agree the scope with you first. See cloud migration.

Cloud Hosting plans are managed hosting accounts on our infrastructure with a control panel. A VPS gives you the whole server, root access and the freedom to run any stack.
